Origin of Huaihe River

The Huaihe River originates from the northwest valley of Taibaiding, the main peak of Tongbai Mountain in the west of Tongbai County, Nanyang City, Henan Province, and its main stream flows through Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. The Huaihe River was called Huaishui in ancient times. According to legend, there is a short-tailed bird named Huai beside the Huaihe River, hence the name Huai Shui. The word “Huai” appeared in Oracle Bone Inscriptions in Shang Dynasty and Zhong Dingwen in Western Zhou Dynasty. In history, Huaihe River, along with Yangtze River, Yellow River and Jishui, was also called Sidu, which was one of the four big rivers flowing into the sea alone.

The main stream of Huaihe River can be divided into three parts: upstream, midstream and downstream, with a total length of 1,000 kilometers and a total drop of 200 meters. Above the Honghekou is the upper reaches, with a length of 360 kilometers, a ground drop of 178 meters and a watershed area of 30,600 square kilometers. Zhongdu, from below the Honghekou to the exit of Hongze Lake, is the middle reaches, with a length of 490 kilometers and a ground drop of 16 meters. The basin area above Zhongdu is 158,000 square kilometers. From Zhongdu to Sanjiangying, it is a downstream river channel with a length of 150 kilometers, and the basin area above Sanjiangying is 164,600 square kilometers. Huaihe River covers five provinces including Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong, with a drainage area of about 270,000 square kilometers, bounded by the waste Yellow River. The whole drainage area is divided into Huaihe River and Yishusi River, with drainage areas of 190,000 square kilometers and 80,000 square kilometers respectively.
